Join Us for Candle-Making
Beeswax Candle-Making for our 2024 Christmas season will commence this fall on Tuesday, September 3 and repeat on Tuesday the 10th and Tuesday the 17th. Production begins at 9:00 a.m. and will end with coffee and donuts around 10:30/11:00. The rooms used for candle making are located in the basement of the Central Moravian Church main offi ce at 73 W. Church Street. Parking is available in the parking lot at the rear of the building.
The process is as follows: In the preparation room, wooden wick bars are cleaned and fitted with measured lengths of wicking. These are then taken next door, to the “hot shop”, where molds (12 candles to a mold) are strung, assembled, and wax is poured. These cool rather quickly, allowing the candles to be removed from the molds and hung to cool further. The used wooden wick bars are then returned to the wick preparation room and the process repeats. There are many and varied jobs to choose from. We will pour between 2,000 and 2,500 candles each Tuesday. All are welcome and newcomers encouraged to participate in this fun and enlightening activity. Training for the uninitiated will be provided as even we “Old Timers” require some re-training in this mass-production of hand-made candles.
E-mail [email protected] or text to484-547-1596 noting the Tuesday’s you would like to participate and whether you’d like to work in the hot shop (wax pouring area) or the wick preparation room. If you intend to work in the hot shop, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and closed shoes are required. Please also provide your phone number and email address in case changes to our schedule need to be made.
Please consider being a part of this annual event and experience the beeswax smells, renew friendships, and enjoy the coffee, doughnuts and conversation that have all become part of our Moravian Christmas season.
